Anitra Blayton works primarily as an installation artist, however, "In The Garden of the Syrupy Sweet", she has demonstrated her diverse range of talent as a visual artist. The image, titled after the Langston Hughes poem "A Dream Deferred," combines many ideas by means of complex layering and overlapping imagery with the use of vibrant color. Blayton invites her audience to become involved and interpret the work for themselves, bringing their personal life experiences into the interpretation of the work.

Anitra Blayton participates in visiting artists lectures and has had solo exhibitions at Women & Their Work, TX, Dallas Visual Art Center, TX and the Oakland Museum Collection Gallery, CA. She has been involved in group exhibitions such as Fresh Visions, New Voices, Arlington Museum, TX, Invisible Threads, William Campbell Art Gallery Contemporary Gallery, TX and Rethinking American Art History, San Francisco Art Institute, CA.
